Houston, we have a burger...list.

I know about a million people have done 'burger tours' or the 'best burger of...' and I really don't like jumping on bandwagons.
However, I DO really love eating burgers.

So, after taking some input from the friendly friends - I've sorted out a list of burger places I want to try (or try again, as the case may be). Many of these places I haven't even heard of until I started researching it, so if my taste trail of burgerness only results in some of the friends finding new haunts then so be it.


First-
Creating this list while attempting to stay at a halfway normal weight during restaurant week is simply torture…I’ve been trying to eat healthy to compensate for my binging at the five places we’re trying between Aug 4-Aug 19 and looking at all the yummy burger photos have made me crave some serious grease and cheese… ah no matter, the things I do for food.

Second-
There’s never a really objective way to judge food in my mind. Everyone likes different things and my ‘best of the best’ will likely be someone’s ‘worst of the worst’…hopefully, I’ll be able to lay it out in such a way that you can make your own mind up. Or, in the alternative- you’ll be happy to join me at the next stop and decide for yourself!

I’m going to try to visit a new locale about once every two weeks… keeping close records on flavor, presentation, the place itself (is it clean, comfortable or worth it b/c of the burger). At some point I may have gorged myself on enough meat and begin to rank them…but for now- the goal is see what all the hype is about Houston’s burger scene.

a date night burger

I’ve heard a good deal about Petrol Station, and I think it did relatively well in the burger bracket over at the Houston Press. My understanding is that it used to be mainly a coffee house that offered beer, but since has veered into the beer garden that offers coffee genre. Regardless of its roots, T and I were looking for a low key ‘out of the way’ place to do a quick date night and Petrol seemed to fit the bill. We pulled up and I wasn’t one bit surprised to see…an old gas station. It was full, but not ridiculously so and we were lucky to nab a parking spot out front. Walking in I immediately felt comfortable, I’m very into wood and dark intimate atmospheres right now and this place supplied both. There’s a giant chalkboard listing some of the beer choices and menus for the more extensive list. my gut runneth over

life has taken an odd turn of late. I agreed to traveling for work so it seems I'm living most of the week in a far away place and the short three days between in the good old H. The decision was made in on a high of emotion - desperate times call for desperate measures and all that. In retrospect, it was a gamble that I should not have taken. Perhaps it will lead to some new opportunities but for now, I'm not so sure. Regardless, it is doing a couple of other things - one, is the spike in airline miles and hotel points that I am accumulating... the other, is the change from barely eating out to basically eating out at every meal. This, in turn, means two more things: one, lots of new fun for the blog and two, lots of calories I'm going to have to struggle to keep off. Christmas in March?

The Mr and I had the honor of attending the Aggie Christmas Party that was thrown at the end of March. It was held @ the Aquarium downtown and I was pleasantly surprised by just everything... the food was amazing (you can't beat bacon wrapped shrimp stuffed with crab stuffing and jalapenos), the decorations were fun (upside down Christmas trees and Lone Star bottles) and the band kept everyone hopping throughout the night. Even Clayton got in on the act and cut a bit of a rug late in the night. I just hope we get invited back next year!
